॥ श्मशानवहिनी उग्र शीतला कालिका ॥

जब सृष्टि में ज्वर, रोग और असह्य पीड़ा का प्रकोप बढ़ा, तब एक भयंकर दैत्य उत्पन्न हुआ—ज्वरासुर। उसका ताप इतना प्रचंड था कि देवता, मानव और समस्त प्राणी उसके ज्वर से कांप उठे। यज्ञ विफल होने लगे, साधनाएं टूटने लगीं और चारों ओर केवल व्याकुलता और मृत्यु का भय फैल गया।

तब प्रकट हुईं माता शीतला—किन्तु इस बार उनका स्वरूप शांत नहीं, अपितु अत्यंत उग्र और तांत्रिक था। श्मशान की जलती चिताओं के मध्य, राख और अग्नि के बीच, श्वेत वर्ण से दीप्त, त्रिशिरा श्मशानवहिनी उग्र शीतला कालिका अवतरित हुईं। गधे पर आरूढ़ यह देवी केवल रोगनाशिनी नहीं, अपितु स्वयं कालाग्नि की साक्षात शक्ति बन चुकी थीं।

तीनों मुखों से प्रकट होती ज्वालामयी दृष्टि ने ज्वरासुर को ललकारा। उसके ताप को शीतल करने हेतु नहीं, बल्कि उसका पूर्ण संहार करने हेतु देवी ने अपना रौद्र रूप धारण किया। एक हाथ में खड्ग, दूसरे में त्रिशूल, और तीसरे में अग्नि से भरा पात्र लेकर उन्होंने उस दैत्य को घेर लिया।

ज्वरासुर ने अपने तप से अग्नि, वायु और विष का प्रकोप फैलाया, परन्तु देवी की जिह्वा से निकली दिव्य ज्वाला ने उसके प्रत्येक प्रहार को भस्म कर दिया। अंततः देवी ने अपने खड्ग से उसका मस्तक छिन्न कर दिया और उसके ज्वर को उसी अग्नि में विलीन कर दिया, जहाँ से वह उत्पन्न हुआ था।

उस युद्ध के बाद देवी ने अपने उग्र रूप को श्मशान में ही स्थापित किया—जहाँ खोपड़ियाँ बिखरी हैं, जहाँ चिताएँ जलती हैं, वहीं यह स्मरण कराती हैं कि हर रोग, हर पीड़ा और हर अहंकार का अंत निश्चित है।

इनका श्वेत वर्ण उस अंतिम शांति का प्रतीक है, जो संहार के बाद प्राप्त होती है। गले की मुंडमाला यह दर्शाती है कि अनगिनत जन्मों और मृत्यु के चक्र को पार कर वही साधक मुक्त होता है, जो इस उग्र शक्ति को स्वीकार करता है।

यह देवी केवल रोग हरने वाली नहीं, अपितु भीतर के भय, दुर्बलता और अज्ञान का नाश करने वाली हैं। जो साधक इनके इस उग्र रूप का ध्यान करता है, वह ज्वरासुर जैसे आंतरिक दैत्यों—काम, क्रोध, भय और मोह—पर विजय प्राप्त करता है।

श्लोक

श्वेतवर्णा त्रिशिरा देवी श्मशानाग्निविभूषिता।

ज्वरासुरविनाशाय कालिकेति प्रकीर्तिता॥

खड्गत्रिशूलधारिणी मुंडमालाविराजिता।

गर्दभवाहिनी घोरा रोगशोकविनाशिनी॥

ज्वालामुखी जिह्वा तस्या दैत्यदर्पनिवारिणी।

भस्मीभूतं जगत्सर्वं तस्याः क्रोधप्रभावतः॥

या देवी सर्वभूतेषु रोगनाशिन्यरूपेण संस्थिता।

नमस्तस्यै नमस्तस्यै नमस्तस्यै नमो नमः॥

जो साधक इस स्वरूप का श्रद्धा और निष्ठा से स्मरण करता है, उसके जीवन से रोग, भय और नकारात्मक ऊर्जा का नाश होता है और भीतर अदृश्य शक्ति का जागरण होता है।

॥ Smashanvahini Ugra Sheetala Kalika ॥

When fever, disease, and unbearable suffering spread across creation, a terrifying demon was born—Jwarasura. His heat was so intense that gods, humans, and all beings trembled under his fever. Rituals failed, spiritual practices broke, and everywhere there was fear, distress, and death.

Then appeared Mother Sheetala—but not in her calm form. This time, she manifested in a fierce, tantric form. Amid burning funeral pyres in the cremation ground, surrounded by ash and fire, emerged the radiant white, three-faced Smashanvahini Ugra Sheetala Kalika. Riding a donkey, she was no longer just a healer of disease, but the embodiment of cosmic destructive fire.

With her three blazing faces, she challenged Jwarasura—not to cool his fever, but to completely destroy him. Holding a sword, a trident, and a vessel of fire, she surrounded the demon.

Jwarasura unleashed fire, wind, and poison through his power, but the divine flames from the Goddess’s tongue burned away every attack. Finally, she severed his head with her sword and dissolved his fever into the very fire from which it arose.

After the battle, the Goddess established her fierce form in the cremation ground—among skulls and burning pyres—reminding that every disease, every suffering, and every ego must come to an end.

Her white form symbolizes the ultimate peace that comes after destruction. The garland of skulls represents the cycle of countless births and deaths, and that only the one who accepts this fierce power attains liberation.

She is not only the remover of disease, but also the destroyer of inner fear, weakness, and ignorance. A devotee who meditates on this fierce form conquers inner demons like desire, anger, fear, and attachment.

One who remembers this form of the Goddess with faith and devotion is freed from disease, fear, and negative energies, and awakens an unseen inner शक्ति (power).
